Summit Pet Product Distributors Softball Champions

On October 14, 2004, the Summit Pet Product Distributors company softball team won the Co-Rec Open D Division Softball Championship when they beat The Wrecking Crew by the score of 16-4.  Summit’s team, nicknamed The Lead Dogs, was part of the Greensboro Parks and Recreation co-ed softball league.  This was the first season that the company has ever fielded a co-ed team.

Summit employees who were interested in participating in a mixed-league team created The Lead Dogs—a term applied to the company’s top retail accounts.  The season got off to a rocky start, with The Lead Dogs losing their first four games.  Midway through the season, team manager Scott Davis made a strategic decision to divide the teams into two separate squads to prevent repeated substitutions.  The team soon caught fire after that, winning four games before the playoffs began.

Summit was seeded in the D Division of the league, where they promptly went on to easily win their first three playoff games before the championship.  In the title game, The Lead Dogs, led by two home runs by Charlie Browne and one home run by Greg Browne, easily defeated The Wrecking Crew.  The seven-inning game was called early due to the ten run mercy rule.

The team members were pleased with the success of the season.  They are making plans for a team next year and are eager to defend their championship.
